Re: 390 to 428
Yeah the 390 i got is a truck block it is currently in my 1968 F350 dump truck but it came out of a 1974 Stake body F350 back in the day the 68 F350 dump truck was my grandpas and i have a 1967 F100 with a 360 FE and C6 trans but I want to build a performance motor with my grandpa when i get out of college and there is some hott cars in my home town but no muscle trucks so i want to show them what a bump can do
but i want to use my block and heads for now eventually get aluminum heads, intake, water pump, long tube headers & 3 inch exhaust but money is tight at the moment but i have to be able to compete with 383 small blocks & a 455 poniac back @ home so if you guys where in my shoes what would you do?

Well, you'll probably have to do what they did....build it up, over a period of time. It's didn't happen overnight with them, unless they've got a money tree, and it won't happen overnight with yours either.
Another thing to just consider....you say you want to keep up with the local hot street cars with your work truck. Well, it's certainly possible, but you're going to have to invest a lot of time and money into it, probably more than they did, since they were starting with vehicles that weren't originally designed to haul gravel or bags of seed corn.
You need to sit down and realistically evaluate what you want to do and then make up a plan to achieve that goal. Just dropping a tricked-out engine into your truck is only about 1/3 of the job. A hot engine is great, but then you'll also need a stout transmission to handle the power. Then you'll need some like of limited-slip rearend with wider rubber to put the power down. However, considering how light these trucks are over the rear tires, you'll probably need some traction aid devices. Plus of course you'll need to make sure the brakes and steering are in top-notch shape, and if you haven't converted to discs, it's definitely time to do so.
Just be patient, follow your plan and start saving up and assembling the collection of parts you'll need as you can afford it. I'll go along with the previous suggestions of putting a 428 crank into your 390 block to create a 410. I'd suggest spending some time reading up on the FordFE.com forums...you'll pick up a lot of great tips and tricks for building that engine.
