its sounds like a low oil noise. if you have blowby. it is possibly causingthe engine to use oil. so when the oil gets low the ticking gets louder. but it could be something else. one thing that ford idd in the tsb's is to move the pcv up to the front drivers side valve cover and put a breather on the rear passenger side valve cover. or just swapping both valve covers would do the same thing. this would cause only the cranck case gases to escape from the enigne and not want to such up oil from the rear of the head area. because the engine tilts slightly to the back so all the oil likes to flow back towards the pcv location where it sits on the back of the valve cover. the only thing you would need to swap the valve covers is a set of gaskets and a longer pcv hose. or get the correct front filler with the pcv hole in it. and move your other breather to the back hole.

Bad gas, wrong grade of gas and low/no oil are the main causes of the ticks. I had the bad gas/grade of gas once. I used the wrong handle on accident and after about 50 miles it started.. tick tick tick tick. I went through the entire tank, put the right gas in the next time and after about 40 miles no more ticking.

If it hasn't been driven in a while the oil will be all gone form the pick up and the valves, and letting it idle for a bit to re-coat everything may stop it as well.

And if the oil filter hasn't been changed since the Carter Administration then it's time for a new one. (Or if it's a Fram, that needs to be changed too.)

I hear you knocking.....but you can't come in...

when i got this truck, the idiot owner had the engine rebuilt, but let it sit for years barely driving it.when i bought it , it was sludged and changed the oil alot. i should have done a engine flush at that time. so now i got blow by issues.
this tapping, im gonna check oil again, stalling when hot, change coil. too scare to dive it now fearing breakdown , im getting low oil pressure. do you think it could be the oil pump , does this have a screen to clean in this oil pump for a 390...

How many quarts of oil are you putting in. I to purchased a 1969 F250 from an idiot. I have been told to use anything from five to seven quarts of oil in it. I started with 5 and had a quick tapping noise when I started it. It would stop after a minute. I changed the oil and filter again and added six quarts and have not heard the problem. My oil pressure measures between 40 and 47 now.
