A smelly situation

I was driving my truck home this afternoon and noticed a smell like rotten eggs was coming into the cab. I opened my hood when I got home and the smell was really strong under the hood. Any ideas as to what this could be? Thanks for any suggestions.

The rotten egg smell, is usually the battery being over charged and it's cookin' the battery acid

That was my thought. Have your battery tested ? Are the sides of the battery bulging at all? If so, the battery is sulfating inside.

Yeah I checked my battery before I left for work and thats where the smell is coming from. I saw where some of the acid is coming out. I bought the battery brand new in early August and this is the first time its done this. What would cause it to over charge?

Bad voltage regulator most of the time.

Most likely the points in the voltage regulator are stuck and it is failing to cycle ... so it charges at full rate all the time.
I've seen giving one a good whack fix it, but it's best to just replace it... they arn't very expensive.

Thanks fellas for your advice. I've had the worst luck with voltage regulators. I've lost count of how many I've replaced on this truck since early 2006. Surely its not normal to go through this many of them. What could cause one to go bad so many different times?

I had the same thing happen a long time ago. On mine it turned out to be the rubber block on the back of the alt, had worn through where the two wires come out and they were touching. It would over charge when running and drain the batt. when parked for a little while.

The alternator could cause it.

I had the same regulator on my truck for 20 years.. through about 3 different alternators.
I put in a new one about a year ago when I put in the new alternator... I'm not sure if it is the alternator or regualtor actin' up now, but I've had problems with low charging output.

watch if there is a rotton egg smell H2S gas smells like that in low concentrations its a poisonous gas so don't go sticking your nose in close cause it can be deadly in higher concentrations.
