Re: Truck eats fuel pumps?

he already pulled the can. nothing. i had the same problem or similar i should say. but i had a hole in the line. i could have sworn the fuel pumps i ws puttign on where fine. but it was a hole in the line under the truck. i fianll yfound it after i parked it on the street and it would drip gas out right under the elbow and form a stain on the street.

the fuel pumps do get worn too. i have several used pumps. and they all will suck and blow from the same side. because they are off the truck they are just pushing air. not fuel if it were fuel it woudlnt do that. so i thought those pumps were bad. they werent. it ws the gas line with a pin hole in it.

Well, I installed the electric pump with a clear filter between it and the gas tank. The truck ran great on the test drive. I parked it while I ate some supper. When I went back out, it fired up and immediately started running poorly. Pumping the gas seemed to keep it going and after a bit, the RPM's started to climb and it seemed okay. However, by the time I backed down driveway, it started cutting out again and I couldn't keep it running. Thats where it sits now. I removed the fuel line at the carb with the "at carb" fuel filter (I'm assuming thats what it is) still on it, ran the electric pump and gas poured out of the filter that screws into the carb so I'm assuming that I'm getting gas that far. Possibly some crud in the carb? It sat for most of the last ten years before I purchased it so it seems like it could be gunked up pretty good. Thanks again for all your advice.

I pulled the top off of the carb. It looked pretty clean inside. Blew out the passages with carb cleaner. There was a small amout of sediment in the bowl which I cleaned out. Kind of questioning if there was any problems in the carb after all. Any ideas guys?

well build up inside fo the carb passages can make a carb not run good. how is the timing chain? did you pull the pump and look inside to se if it had any slack in it. is the timing good?

Tonight, I reinstalled the carb. It fired off and ran for a bit and sounded pretty good, then it started loosing power, backfired and died. It would not start after that. I did not pull the pump to check the chain tension. As far as checking the timing, I did not do that but I did remove the distributor cap and noticed that the rotor was rubbing the contacts on the dist. on one side. I grabbed the rotor and noticed that the shaft would move a fair amout. So I'm figuring I have some worn bushings there. I have a distributor ordered to correct that. I also pulled a plug - it looked moderately clean. It is one of those Bosch Platinum +3 plugs or whatever. I've heard some bad things about those - does anyone think I should replace them with a different brand/style plug such as a autolite or ACDelco with a conventional electrode?

i'd like to see what a new dist will do for it. ive never heard or seen one that was bad enough to run the inside of the cap with the rotor. as far as plugs . i dont know about the bosch in our trucks. i do have bosch platinums in my 93 302. they seem fine. ive always used autolites or motorcrafts in my truck.

Hey fordman,
You were right about liking to see what a new distributor would do. I put the new one in tonight, hit the key and it was instantly running - never started that good before. On the test drive, I was hitting the gas like I would to drive in a normal fashion and it was spinning the tires. I didn't put a new set of plugs in. If it runs that good on the bosch's, maybe I'll just leave them in. Thanks for all of the good advice. Hopefully, it will finally be a dependable truck. Up til now, its only been driveable for about a half hour in the last two weeks.
