advice on what to do with my 352

Post by stephen44 »

I believe this is the original 352 out of a '67 f100.
SO it runs - but the truck does not have brakes - so i have no idea of performance. It heats up ok and does not seem to smoke excessively, but there does seem to be a ton of oil down low.

I am doing an off frame budget resto and wondered since the engine is out - what I should do to it ?

should I rip it apart, - just the heads - ? i want it to run well for about a year - whilst I find a 390 that i can 'build-up' to a 350'ish HP engine. So I don't want to spend a ton - $3-400 feels about right.

advice please ?

- Stephen
thanks

If the compression's good and it's not smoking or knocking I'd just clean it up, replace some gaskets and drive it. 8)

Good advice there  . If it does smoke a little now it could possibly be from an oil leak and not internal problems. The rear intake gasket is a common place for an oil leak on these engines. :hmm: Also the oil-pan gasket.

the ones that are leaking. check the valve covers oil pan and intake. as well as the front and back seal on the crankshaft.

As long as you have it out, do them all. The rear main seal is a lot easier to do when the engine is on a stand, as opposed to in the truck. And to do this, you have to remove the oil pan. So there's pan gaskets.
And in order to pull the heads on an FE engine, the intake manifold has to come off. So there's head and manifold gaskets.
I would just do them all while the engine is out.

So I've got the engine out now - and am trying to decide what to do.

What is a good compression for this 352 ?

- at what point is it too low ?

- Stephen
thanks

How do you plan to check it with the engine removed from the truck?

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!
