Serpentine belt drive on a 360 ?
Anyone ever setup a serpentine belt setup on a big block ? I was wondering if there is a way to junkyard a serpentine setup for the FE motors. Mine is a 360. I imagine there is no difference between a 360 and 390 when it comes to the accessory drive ?
I would think you could use most of the same parts off of a small block. The alternator (3G) and water pump pully should work off of a 302/5.0 right ? Crank pull and tenisioner would be the harder ones I imagine. Crank pully shouldn't be TOO hard. Really, wouldn't fabing the tensioner be the main issue and making sure it kept proper tension ?

the serpetine water pumps run backwards from ours. so you have to consider that when puttign the serpetine belts on. if you keep it going in the same direction. then you wont have to worry about it.

Oh ya, I forgot about the reverse rotation problem on the water pump. Is there a reverse rotation water pump for the FE motors stock or would that be a specialty item ?
I guess it wouldn't be TOO hard to replace the impeller with a reverse rotation impeller... that and the pully are the only real difference right ?

well i am thinking as long as you can get it turning in the correct direction you could use your own waterpump and the pulley from the serpetine setup.

You are definately right about the water pump. If I keep it turning the way it does stock I wouldn't need to change anything. That being said, its provably easier to make it into a reverse rotation pump in terms of belt routing once I've got a PS setup added. Right now its just alt, crank and water pump.
I did some google-ing and I found that March has a kit for this.... sort of. Number one, I don't want to know how much it costs because its provably going to make me physically ill. Number two, I don't think its a true serpentine setup because its 2 belts to run everything. The only time I've seen a serp setup with 2 belts is when a blower is involved. Number three, I don't want too much shiney crap in the engine bay, this truck is for working, not showing off.
Was there never a factory serp setup for the FE motors ?
I've got a spare 5.0 setup which with the use of a slightly different bracket will bolt up to a 351w no problem. I was thinking that if I just used those parts with the FE motor and built a proper bracket then I'd be in business. How different is the bolt patern on the front face of an FE head compaired to a Windsor head ? My truck and car are no where near each other for me to compair.

Hey Rusty67! I'm also interested in making my FE a serpentine belt engine. Since I'm looking specifically at the March kit instead of alternatives to it, I decided to confine my questions to my original thread instead of adding them in here. But maybe something in my thread could be useful to you also! http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =3&t=43993
Thanks Rusty67!

Just use the factory set up...no problems with it.

The earlier FE motors had a 3 bolt crank pulley. Around '73 or so they have a 4 bolt crank pulley.

Ok, so I should check to see if a 360/390 ballancer has the same 4-bolt patern as the 5.0s. This would make it quite a bit easier.

Not that I don't appreciate the link and those are some sweet looking brackets but good Lord those things are pricey !

[rationalize]
well, they do include the altenator and PS punp (and A/C comp I think).
[/rationalize]
A close study of my engine will reveal that I feel stock pullys work fine.![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
