converting my 68 to power steering

Post by Old Bird »

I've got a 68 camper special (390) with power discs but no power steering. What is involved in swapping to power steering? Would it be as easy as getting a power steering box and pump from another 67, or would there be more involved?

It's for my twin boys, sure they're only 3 right now, but it's all for them! Well, and my twin girls. They're not even 1 yet, but when they are I'll have a pit crew!

that depends on what steering box you want to use. the bendix power steerign box was used in our 67 and soem 68 trucks. mayeb all 68 i am unsure. in 69 and up they used the sagianw power steering box. you will need the power steerign pump and moutning brackets for your engine as well as the power steerign box. i dont think the pitman arm will matter as far as linkage. but it will have to be the one for that steerign box that you are using. a power steering cooler is recommended to use with the power steering setups. especially if you use the bendix power steering box. also if you use the sagianw power steering box you will want a shorter steering column . the sagianw box is longer where it hooks to the steering column. so the old manual or bendix power steering column will not work with the saginaw power steering box. the power steering column also requires the use of a matched or power steerign firewall bracket/cover for the column hole.

Thanks for the info, doesn't sound that bad - I'd probably stick with the Bendix unit just to make it simpler. Time to start scouring the junk yards.
