390 or 352 for 1967 Ford F100
Hey all,
I purchased a 1967 Ford F100 and the prior owner told me that I it had a 390 in it which I thought was great, until I found out that the 1967 Ford F100's are only made with 352 engines. My question is how do I determine that I have a 390 or a 352. I have to change out a carburetor and the I purchased one for a 352 not a 390. Thank you and I will be waiting.

either carb will work, the only way to determine is by measuring the stroke

the 390 stroke is 3.78. the 360 is 3.50 i think the 352 is 3.50 but the bore is smaller than the 360 and 390.

You can measure the stroke with a dowel rod. What you do is set the crank to TDC using the timing marks, then pull a couple of spark plugs (I think it's #2 and #7, someone please confirm for me!!!). One of those will be at TDC and one will be at BDC. Then you run a wooden dowel in to the bottom and mark it right where it comes out. Then do the same thing in the other cylinder, being sure to mark it in the same way. The distance between the two marks will be your approximate stroke. Good luck!

Shouldn't there be casting numbers somewhere on the block?

All normal FE's have 352 cast into the block, as all versions of the 352, 360, and 390 use the same casting with different bores and strokes.Ford240 wrote:Shouldn't there be casting numbers somewhere on the block?

no not really. there are some castign numbers but they dont mean too much. the 352 on the frotn of the block only means that the block came from the 352 castign mold. in and around the 73-76 era. the 352 changed to 105. that is what i know for sure. i have heard stories about numbers or letters on the back of the block for the 427 and 428 blocks. but i didnt pay much attention to the stories.Ford240 wrote:Shouldn't there be casting numbers somewhere on the block?

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
