Almost all of our fire engines (pumpers) at work have 2 stoke 6v92's in them. Ours are slightly newer and turbo charged so they have a more quiet nature to them since the turbo is kind of a natural muffler. They are still loud and high reving though. When I was in the Air Force we had crash trucks with 8V92's and they were beast.

I still love the sound but after about 8 hours or so that scream gets old. The first big wrecker I drove was an LN9000 Ford with a 238 hp 6-71 Detroit and a 10 speed. We used to run tractor swaps from Pittsburgh to Baltimore pretty regularly. Out and back stopping only long enough to drop one and hook the other. My ears would ring for hours after I got home.

One of Detroit's advertising people came up with the term " Buzzin Dozen " in the days of the V12 engines. It fits. Air starters were popular on trucks years ago but you rarely see them today. Every time I hear one it reminds me the old Steven King cult flick " Maximum Overdrive ".
