Help with Strange Noises

Post by jla_ksu »

Hi All,

I have given up trying to figure this out myself. I thought the collective wisdon of the forum may have an idea.
I have two strange noises coming from my truck, 1971 F100 360, manual 4 speed transmission.
The first happens all the time. When I go over a slight bump in the road it sounds like I have a loose washer somewhere. It is a kind of metallic clinking. I replaced the shocks and have since ckecked all of the nuts and bolts and I cant find anything. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

The second sound only comes when I accelerate quickly. It sounds like something is hitting the fan belt. I look under the hood and can't find anything that would cause the sound.

Thanks for all of your help on this and the other things I have learned here.

One place to check is your lower radiator hose. They have been known to rub, though it may look like it clears at idle. Under acceleration, things may flex enough under the hood to have it rub.

What condition are your motor mounts in? If they are broken, the engine could be lifting up under hard acceleration and causing your noise.

i have a 93 f 150 that had a clicking noise when i hit a bump. come to find out the bolt that held down the front spring was lose and the washer would make a clinking noise when you hit a bump. when i tightened the bolt the noise went away.
on another note the guy who had the truck before i did did some front end work on the truck. when it was taken back to that mechanic he didn't know what it was he just tightened the shock bolt he forgot to tighten. and i took the search from that. easy to find just start eliminating anything that could be lose or get lose when the suspension moves.

On the fan belt noise I bet when you gas it the engine is tilting and allowing your fan to come in contact with your fan shroud. Look at the opening of the shround and see if it has any rub marks on it.

I 2nd the Idea to take alook at the motor mounts and the shroud bolts. I recently tore a motor mount and it was lifting in there and beating my shroud up and lossened it up for a constant rub. When I got it hobbled home (from offroading)I discovered it had a broken mount and the shroud had wadded up all the fins on my fan, couldn't belive a fiberglass shroud beat up a metal fan. go figure anything is possible

Can you power-brake a manual trans? If you can, pop the hood and watch the motor from within the gap of the hood and cowl. Might just see that motor trying to jump outta there!

Mine has a broken lower fender mount, makes about the same noise. It's the mount under the truck right in front of the door, Could be an easy fix. Good luck.

As for the acceleration noise, my first thought was the motor mounts as well.
As for the clinking noise, try putting the front end up on a hydraulic jack. Then let the jack down suddenly and listen. Hopefully it will make the noise and you can track it down.

thats a good idea about dropping the truck down off a jack to simulate a bump. i just got under the truck and started looking at what could make a clincking noies on my f150

I found that the clinking noise from going over bumps was my emergency brake cables where the two connect to the one bracket and the bracket was hitting on the under carriage.
