Is the 67 bendix power booster any good?

Post by fordloaf »

I have read about all the 67 power booster swap issues, so is it a good idea to use a 1967 Bendix Hydrovac Power Booster, or are the more modern boosters the way to go?

The '67 boosters are a bit more expensive and cumbersome. If you already have one installed and it's working fine, I wouldn't replace it with the later style. However, if it's going bad, or you're adding power brakes for the first time, I'd suggest just getting the newer style (along with a '68-up brake pedal assembly to match).

I dont have power brakes now so was hoping to add them (to the existing drums) I saw a bendix PB on ebay but am not sure if it would work. If get a 68+ brake peddle can i just then go to an auto parts store and get a booster? Do i need any vac lines to the carb?

I would get the '68-up brake pedal assembly (the bracket and everything) and bolt it into your truck, then go to the parts store and get yourself the booster. You'll also need to get a check valve (I'm not sure if the booster will come with one or not probably not) that looks like this:

Also, the replacement boosters don't come with mounting brackets, so you'll have to hit a salvage yard for those.

You will need to hook up a vacuum line between the intake manifold and the check valve. The hose is clamped up out of the way to the firewall and then connects to the intake manifold. Normally there's a 'T' mounted at the back of the manifold, or at least a plug where one should be.

That setup is for the heavy-duty trucks, it won't work for the F100-F350s.
