need advice on p/s to manual box

Post by 67_trickedout »

i just recently became a new member of this site but i've relied on it for the past year or so.
i have a 67 f100 ranger. this is my first project. my dad use to rebuild classics so i said what heck i'll give it a try. plus i like the looks and capabilities of these trucks.

at any rate i've ran into what is probably the simplest thing that i just cant seem to fig out. my truck orig had the manual box in it but i got a p/s box when i baught the new motor for it i decided to go ahead and put in the p/s box. only prob was it leaked after i had it all put together. so i took it apart with intentions of replacing the seals. well apparently i took the wrong part off and i played the "find all the tiny balls on the driveway" game (as i read in a dif post earlier).
i've recently said to heck w/ it, i'm gonna put the manual steering box back in it. well i cant seem to disassemble the box from the drag link. you're suppose to use a tunin fork to pop it out but i think i did more damage to the fork than anything. do i need a thicker tunin fork? or is there some other way? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks. now i'm gonna time it to see how long it takes compared to the 2 hours i spent using a tunin fork. from the looks of it i'm gonna go with 5 minutes.

you need this part not the pitman arm puller. they look the same. but they arent. this one is smaller and made to the size of the draglink end. the pitman arm puller is larger and made to fit the pitman are. http://www.autozone.com/R,2703551/store ... Detail.htm

funny story... i actually had that tool in my garage and didnt even know it. with the tool it took me an hour an half in 20 degree weather before i gave up. the next day when it was about 55 degrees it popped out in 2 minutes. im guessing that going from 20 degrees to 55 degrees made all the difference.

Actually, it's having the correct tool to do the job that makes all the difference.
