I was cleaning up my tie rod and crossbar (call these whatever you want). Many of you know I am doing a complete rebuild. I wanted to reuse the existing steering linkages, but I need to know what kind of play these things can have in them.
The tie rod (short piece) has what looks to be a stud with a ball end inside a ball inside the rod. Both the stud and ball give movement. All of the other three ball joints appear to be a stud in a ball that moves. The stud has a little play in the ball itself. How much play can be in the stud, I am going to guess none?
Input appreciated. I also made a post of coil spring thickness that I hope somebody can help me with.

Re: How much play in steering linkage?
You are correct, there is supposed to be no play at all. If there's play, then they have to be replaced, period. Don't mess with worn-out parts, especially with steering and brake components.
