power steering pump busted

Post by BigRedTruck »

I have the four bolt type , this is unfortunate because I could not locate any around in the yards and I took it to a shop. they could not find a match either. know it is at the shop and I can't find out what model it is exactly. none of my catalogs mention 4 bolts but several different types. If this is specific to a certain type please let me know! thanks

Pump.

When you say a four bolt. Is that the bolts that holt it to the bracket mounted on the engine? I have only seen the three bolt type, thats why I asked if you were working on the pump or gear.

Get a pic of it if you can. I have to go Subaru parts hunting this Saturday. I can also check to see if I can locate it for you.

Initially I thought it was the pump that was busted, and they did too. However, it appears that one or more of the hoses will have to be replaced, which causes even more problems because on one of the hoses on the end that attaches to the pump, there is a nut or attachment of some sort that is larger than normal. Also, they're having trouble finding a gear box. They believe they have ordered the right one, but they won't know for four days. It attaches to some sort of frame by four bolts that form a square. They indicated that normally there are only two, and the boxes they have received have only had places for two bolts. A further difference is the presence of a filter-shaped protrusion on the left side at about a fifteen degree angle. It's been a while since I've been through the catalogs, but it sounds to me like they were ordering manual steering boxes instead of the automatic.

What do you think?

Sounds to me like you're talking about a Bendix steering box:

(Image taken from the Power Steering tutorial)

If you want my two cents, get rid of the Bendix and go with the Ford/Saginaw type. The Bendix has a reputation for overheating and blowing seals, problems eliminated with the Saginaw box. The only bad part about the deal is that the Saginaw is several inches longer than the Bendix, so the steering column shaft needs to be several inches shorter to compensate. (All this is covered in the tutorial.)

It also sounds like your mechanic is not very resourceful. I have never seen either gear with only two bolt holes. Infact I have never seen any at all gear boxes with only two bolt holes. The hose if can't be re ordered can be re fabbed by a hydraulic shop. But I am almost positive you can still get them thru the auto store.

Take a look at the pics Keith posted. The gear on the left is probably the one you have.

Maybe you should contact your local parts shop and see what they say about the availability of the parts you need. If anything, to cover your butt incase that mechanic is running you around.

Try these folks, maybe there is a shop near you. http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4663

I wouldn't call them not resourceful...they are actually one of the better shops in town. I think it stems from the fact that there are no 67-72's in any of the yards around here. Triple A, the largest simply crushes older stuff. I have looked....seems that built up area's crush more than areas with less resources. I'm off tommorow so i'll get some shots. I'll get a pic of that connection too. Are there any numbers that might confirm what type it is?

If yours is the Bendix box, there will be a large script "B" on the side. There's a picture of that on the power steering tutorial page listed above.

I don't know if they are ID'ed on the hose. An auto shop should be able help you out. If you still need a gear you should post a thread in the wanted section of the gear you need and the hose(s).
