Steering column lengths

Post by bumt72 »

Does anyone one know the length of the steering columns, power steering and manual steering. I am doing a toyota power steering swap on the 61 and am wanting to just use a 70s power steering steering column if I can get away with it. The suggestions I am getting is buy a Ididit 30 1/2" column but... cough $300 for a steering column is a tad much at this time.

I have several I can measure. The length varied on the 67-72s plus the Standard and P/S use different shaft lengths so there is several variations.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

OK, here is what I got;
Early column ( 3 spoke wheel) Mast length from top of shift bowl 31 1/2
68-69 Length from shift bowl to rag joint face 34
Center of mounting slot to rag joint face 21 1/2
Mounting bolt slots 1 1/4 long

Later ( 2 spoke wheel) Mast length 29
71-72 Shift bowl to rag joint face 30 3/4
rag joint face to center of mounting slot 18
Mounting bolt slots 2 inches long
I am not sure if the 67 is the same as 68-69 but I believe it is. I also don't remember which the 70 is, 2 spoke or three but I think it may have a length of it's own. I tried to switch shafts between t different 2 spoke columns once and they were different lengths although they were visually the same column.
I also have a newer mid 70s column with the emergengy flasher switch and it measures the same as the other 2 spoke ones except it is 1/2 inch longer from the top of the shift bowl to the rag joint face.

I really have to wonder why the 2 1/2 inch longer column in the same body style. I thought the steering wheel dish might be different but they both measure about 6 inches.

Thanks WB, that is good news from my end. Once I get the 61 torn down and have a better idea of the length at least I know I have some options that I can actually afford.
