Power steering worm gear adjustment.

Post by rjewkes »

First in my 72 f100. Is it adjustable or is the worm gear a fable? or is it possibly something else? I'm eating both outside edges on front tires.
Didn't do this until i removed the hood could the lower weight cause this? It doesn't track wrong. And the tie rods are not swaying when i go strait down the road. Please help?

From what i understand, the worm gear is what converts the steering shaft motion to steering linkage. When this wears over time, you notice more slop in the steering wheel. The adjustement allows you to reduce this slop.

This should not have any impact on tire wear as that is governed by ball joints, shocks, and alignment (camber, caster, toe in).

Ball Joints :hmm:  The steering box wont do anything with your alignment or the wear on your tires. That is all in the rest of your linkages.

ok had my 260 pound buddy stand on front bumper. and he may weigh more than the hood cuase the front tires cambered in a striaght up and down alignment. and then the fron squated down but the tires were still in correct camber. So i need to finish my hood and get it back on.

Makes me wonder how those guys(and gals) Running fiberglass front ends or just hoods get correct camber.
