disc brakes for brake drum spindles?

Post by snake »

I thought someone used to offer a disk brake conversion kit for '65-'72 that is similar to those for the older straight axle trucks and has a bracket that bolts to the stock drum spindle to mount the caliper etc ?? But I don't see it listed now???

Does anyone know if one is still available?? or maybe the same kit for the earlier years will also work on the stock drum spindle but they quit listing it that way due to the ease of the dentside spindle conversion??

(Yes I know all about the dentside spindles and how easy and inexpensive it is to convert that way - I've done that. I'm researching some other options that go beyond just converting to disk brakes so please bear with me :wink: )

Thanks!

You can do that with the F250/350. Dent discs on bump spindles.

I need some expert advice in plain engish because I am not great at reading all the manuals and such. I looked up all the info and I can't figure it out either, most of the stuff pertains to 100s & 150s. I want to put front disc on my 67 F250 from a 71 F250 from Fordman. My question is do I need the spindles from the disc set up or will my spindles for my current drum setup work with the disc calipers and mounts, ect? Thanks in advance. Bill

I can't say for sure since I haven't actually done this myself, but my understanding is as follows for F-250s:

The disk caliper mount bolts to the spindle - (its not integral)
The disk caliper mount can be removed from the disk truck and bolted to the drum spindle.
You also need to use disk rotors/hubs and calipers
There may be different versions of hubs/rotors so you have to be careful there - or maybe its a bearing issue, I'm not sure.......

Others on here now more and there are some old threads on this topic - did you try a search?

Thanks for your response. I hate to be paranoid, but I want to make very sure that both of the spindles are exactly the same for the F250. Reason being I want to go ahead and get my new king pin set installed so I can have a rolling chassis again. If not I have to wait until I can get some disc spindles. I did find in a search a thread from Flatbedford http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... c&&start=0 and http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... es#p249088 which has some pics

I was going to send you a link to that thread. Yes, the '71 caliper brackets will bolt up to the '67 spindles. The caliper brackets use the same bolt holes as the drum brake baking plates. The spindle is the same. The only difference that I know of is the outer bearing is larger for the disc hub, but, you should get that with the disc parts.
Here's my disclaimer;
I came to this conclusion using parts from a '67 F350 and a '77 F350. Both were DRW trucks. It has been my understanding that the F250 and F350 front ends are the same based on what I have read here on this forum. To confirm, check the online catalog at www.rockauto.com or something like it. See if the part numbers are the same for the different years.
