i figure the battery in the 71 is dying weak and the battery cables arn't big enough (they smoke). so im going to cover all bases, swap a new optima in, larger cables, new high torque starter.
but i dont want to take this off-topic
Try www.robbmcperformance.com for a starter and www.custombatterycables.com for 1/0 sized battery cables. I put these on my 352 with headers and have not had any issues with heat soak. They are pricey, but you get what you pay for. Both websites are a made in the USA manufacture. Just my
Hey 67FordKc, thanks for the info on the RobbMc starters. Those are interesting, and not much more expensive at $259.
It's tough to make the comparison between the RobbMc and the MasterTorque, since they don't list all of the same specs. And the RobbMc comparison page seems to compare their starter to the Hitachi and Denso starter styles, but not to specific starter models.
Do you know of any other information that would help make a good comparison between the MasterTorque and the RobbMc?
I called and spoke with one of the owners when I bought mine. I told him my concerns and he was very helpful with great information. Give them a call, they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They shipped my starter and I received it in just a few days. Before I bought the RobbMC starter I tried some other high torque starters and did not like how they fit behind the headers, the RobbMC fit great and you can rotate the solenoid where you want it. Good Luck!!

Thanks!

I would think so. I burned up the starter on my old 84 F250 diesel truck, due to low batteries.

Yes. probably applies to all starters but I think the stock Ford ones are just a little less forgiving that others.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.
Here's mail I sent to RobbMc today--hopefully his answers will help make a good comparison between the RobbMc and Mastertorque:
Hello RobbMc!
I'm interested in adding a high quality starter to my 1972 Ford F250
project. It has a new 390 engine with 10:1 compression and headers.
Initially I was looking at the Powermaster Mastertorque starter since it
got excellent reviews on Fordification.com (1967-1972 Ford truck online
forum). Then a forum member recommended the RobbMc starter instead.
I've read your site in detail to learn as much as I can about the RobbMc
starter (part 2001), yet I'm still having trouble making a fair comparison
between it and the Mastertorque. They're difficult to compare because not
all the same specifications are listed for both.
I would like to buy a RobbMc starter because I have a hunch that the
quality is higher than the Mastertorque, but I'd like to make a good side
by side comparison of the two before making my final decision.
Would it be possible for you to answer these questions about the RobbMc
part 2001? Thank you!
1. What is the torque ft/lb rating of part# 2001?
2. What is the maximum engine compression ratio recommended for use with this starter?
3. Is the RobbMc quite literally made 100% in the USA, with 100% USA made components?
4. What other information should I know about the RobbMc that could help me understand its benefits over the Mastertorque?
I received a very detailed and well thought out response from Robb himself shortly after sending the mail!
Since his response is so personable and high quality, I've asked his permission to post it here. I wouldn't want to take 1-on-1 communication from somebody else and make it public without their agreement. It would be different somehow if it were from some big company and more anonymous in nature (which is kind of what I expected somehow--I didn't foresee a personal response from the chief himself).
I heard from Robb that it would be fine to forward his mail to individuals but he'd rather me not post it publicly, which makes sense to me since it wasn't designed for mass consumption. So I'll P.M. both of you with it. If anybody else is curious I could P.M. others as well.
