How do I remove this funny rag joint bolt?

Post by robroy »

Good evening,

Today I attempted to install a new rag joint on a rebuild steering box and discovered that I need to re-use the bolt that holds it on the input shaft.

I've never seen a bolt that looks quite like this. I tried some sockets on it and it looks to be around 15/32", but that's a wacky size and I wouldn't try it with a regular socket before finding out what it's all about.

Here's the bolt head--sorry for the blurry photo:

Here's the new rag joint with a blank place where the bolt should go:

What kind of socket fits this special bolt?

Thanks very much for all the great advice,

It's called the rare 12point socket. You probably already gots one! It's either 3/8" or 7/16" I just don't know.
But those are pretty close! Put it on a long extension or speed handle. Tap it on with a 2x4 or a fancy rubber
faced hammer like I got. Hehe. Turn it left and the funny looking bolt comes out, slicker than snot! Jake

Ah, you can buy them "rag joint" kits at places like Advance AP for under 10$. Use your old coupler parts and
renew the rubber tire part. I don't know how much you got in that pretty joint? More than 10$?

Good morning Jake, thanks for your reply!

A 12-point bolt--is that all this is? :)

This explains why none of my 6-point sockets would fit on it--I figured it was something mysterious and exotic.

As for the price of the rag joint I'm using, it was a genuine Ford part from Dennis Carpenter for $80. You're probably right that I could have gotten the job done for less cash, but I'm happy with this part. It's pretty.

Jake, thanks again for your advice.

It is a 12 point 7/16 bolt and is what Ford has been using for decades on rag joints. Any standard 12 point 7/16 socket will work just fine. Hawkrod

Hawkrod, thanks for the confirmation on what I'm looking for! I'll pick up a 12 point 7/16" socket this week.

Much appreciated,
