F designations
My buddy just scored a '72 F100 2WD long bed. He tells me a 100 is a 1/2 ton and a 150 is a heavy 1/2 ton. Is this so? I thought a 100 was a 1/4 ton or something. I'm originally a Chevy guy so all the Ford stuff is new to me. I got an old Ford about a year ago so don't go all flamin me for the Chevy thing ok? I like all old trucks.

You got it bro. 100 is 1/2 ton, 250 is 3/4 ton. Although a 250 will carry 2 ton's without grief. As long as it's got
floater in the back. The 100, with 250 springs will carry a ton&1/2. Only problem, the 9" housing will BEND! A lot.
I done tested this myownself. Those are the tested, what you can get away with guidelines. I also have hands on
experience crash testing 100's into the side of a mountain. Of course just to see how it held up. Jake

Re: F designations
The way I understand it is that Ford introduced the F150 as a way of fudging a little on emission equipment requirements. Trucks below a certain GVW rating had to have certain emission controls installed, so by bumping up the GVW rating of their trucks, they just escaped having to install the emission control equipment on these trucks that the F100s were required to have.
So essentially you're right...the F150 is a heavy-half-ton.

Thanks guys. At least I can tell him he is only half right. Yes it's a "heavy" half ton, but it was only to slip under the EPA radar. Works for me!
