Brake line tubing setup

Post by albertv78 »

Do you guys think a brake line kit for a 73 or 74 f100 will work for my 70 that I'm doing a disk brake disk brake conversion on? I have no tools to bend or flare my own tubing or the desire to spend a long time doing it myself. Inline Tube sells the complete kit so I was hoping it would work for me especially since I'm putting the prop valve on top of the steering box where the 73-77 have them mounted.
Thanks,
Albert

When I did my disc brake conversion, I took the '74 front lines to use for templates to bend the new lines and they fit perfectly. I think the rear lines would too, but you may still have to tweak them here and there.

At that same time, I stumbled across a cool product at my local NAPA; easy-bend brake lines. You can bend them by hand and they will not kink. You can even bend them back straight if you make a wrong bend and they won't fracture. They're easy to tell from regular brake lines because they are dark green, almost black. They are also only about $1 or $2 more each than the regular hard lines are. In fact, those are all they stock here now. I put all new brake lines on my bump for like $35 or $40.

I borrowed my local parts houses' single flare tool for free since I'm a regular customer, but it shouldn't cost much to just rent one. Or, you can buy one for around $25 most places. I'd liked to have double-flared them, but wasn't going to complain since I used the tool for free. There's even a tutorial on flaring tubing here on the site. It's not too hard to do, and that way you can run the lines the way you want to run them for your personal setup.

I was able to completely replace every single brake line on my truck for about $30 (including all new line and connectors) and a couple afternoons worth of work. The 3/16" line used on these trucks doesn't require a tubing bender, unless you're making very sharp bends, and I borrowed a double-flare tool from a friend.
