Rust and sealer questions

Post by HRDROKN »

Thinking about the rainy season approaching and what I need to do to my 69 Crew Cab to help protect it now and down the road.

What would be the best way to redo the cab gutter (drip rail?)... thinking that I should wire wheel the top and bottom, removing all paint, sealer and loose rust. Then what to apply to neutralize the rust I can't get to and how should I go about re-sealing.... any favorite products that I should look into?

Speaking of rust... any products out there that I could spray up and into door panels, rockers and anywhere that moisture causes issues? Like a wash or something?

I've been noticing that there are some areas that are difficult at best to reach and there is this fine silt like dirt in the nooks of seems and such. I have tried getting to these areas as best I could with a wire brush (even have drilled better drain holes), but I'm afraid that with all my efforts the results are minimal.... hence the above question about a wash.

Do you think using a pressure washer to get into these areas will just cause more harm than good?

This fish oil stuff sounds interesting? Sounds like it could saturate any left behind dirt/silt that I can't get to?

But will it make my truck smell?

It doesn't look like an acid based rust converter would be a good idea for areas that I can't rinse and dry? Would the application of fish oil neutralize the acid?

Body work is all new to me, so I'm on a huge learning curve here...

Drip rail.... this is what I got. You can see that there is some surface rust at the underside of the rail.

The top looks pretty good for the most part. There was about a 1/4 inch of sealer in the top of the rail, but being that it is cracked or partially seperated along the lip... that is what I need to seal most? Also I guess I need to dig all the sealer out with a screwdriver or utility knife? The wire wheel wont quite get it all. Or is this being to anal about it?

when you ask if there is anything to protect inside the doors etc., i just brushed POR-15 all over the inside of my doors and the corners of the ceiling of the cab.

as for the drip rail i dont know of a really good sealer.

Should I use a flexible sealer or firm set seam sealer to the "gutter" of the drip rail???? Brush on or caulk gun application? After I neutralize any rust of course??

Do I use an etching primer then seal or seal first and prime?

Hey HRDROKN

You need to use automotive seam sealer on your rain gutter.

KK is right. Eastwood makes the seam sealer that you pour in. POR 15 everything else. I wish the drip rail looked as good as yours on my 72. I can see the stars at night through it. I figured it was an unnamed option on that year. Good luck.
