Rust bullet/ POR 15 experts.

Post by CO684X4 »

I am ready to paint my frame. I am using Rust bullet black shell. I was going to spray it but I dont want to deal with any problems with my HOA. How do you keep the brush strokes/marks out of the paint when applied with a brush/ roller? I tried a spot yesterday with some foam brushes and It doesnt look good. Is there a way to make it look smooth?

Not sure about the Rust Bullet (so you might want to ingore everything that follows  ), but the POR 15 goes on so thin the material flattens right out. I don't have any brush strokes on my frame and I used a 87 cent brush from Home Depot.

Good luck...

You just need to thin it out a bit...make it more watery, so it'll spread out. If the brush/roller strokes don't lay down smooth within a few minutes, then it's too thick.

Hmm....apparently not. I'm surprised...I just went to their FAQ page and it specifically says:
Do not reduce or thin Rust Bullet®. Because of the exact balance of viscosity, solvent, and active ingredients that must be maintained, Rust Bullet® must not be thinned. Thinning or adding any other product to Rust Bullet® will compromise the performance and quality of the cured product.
OK, I'll retract that statement. Apparently you either live with the brush strokes or spray it on. :o At least it's not specifically addressed in their Application Guidelines.

Just checked my first coat when I got home from work and the marks did kinda level out. Still doesnt look that great. I just tried another section with the type of roller the recomend and it looks way better already. So I think the roller is the way to go. I'll have to see what it looks like after the second coat.

I first tried with a foam brush. In the directions they say to use a synthetic fiber roller with a 1/4" nap. I picked up a 3 inch roller from homedepot and seems to work better.
