Painting over POR 15

Post by 69twotone »

I am sure that somewhere I saw that if you painted over POR 15 that the color may not match or that the body area would not take the paint as well. Any truth to this? POR 15 operator says no but I am not sure I want to trust an operator. I am thinking about using POR on the rocker panels and the fireall since the rocker panels seem to be a prime area for rust.

Anyone care to weigh in??

you can paint over it but i dont know how nice it looks. and you have to paint over it when its tacky or else you have to buy their primer which i have to do now. i dont know if that helped

if it's "dry" POR15 you need to sand it or use there primer as Ryan mentioned.

Ok, Well I had not done it yet I wanted to check before I did. Ryan are you putting anything on your rockers for rust or are you just going to prime and paint them? Any ideas guys I would hate to put alot of time in and later see the rockers rust so I think I should put something on them. I thought I read somewhere that a self etching primer was a good rust protectant.

Thought I would try one more time and see if there were any thoughts on my second question.

I would never trust just a primer coat over bare metal to prevent rust. It needs POR-15 or another rust inhibitor, then primer/paint. Just my :2cents: .

hmmm. i didnt plan on por-15ing all the lowest parts of the body (rocker).. but now that i think about it, and since i have the rocker trim to help hide it, i think i will por-15 all of the rocker panels on the truck and then paint over it. it will be noticably bumpy if you look closely but rust holes are even more noticable
thanks for the idea :D

and yes primer/paint will get rusted over time. which is why there is por-15 :D

Thanks Ryan,

I think that is what I will do as well. The rocker panels, cab corners and cab floor seem to be the areas for rust.

Are you going to por-15 the inside of the cab corners that you can get to from the inside back corners where the gas tank sits.

I cleaned that area out and found a 1/2 inch of sand and dirt collected in the bottom. It is no wonder those areas rust.

also if its not a paint i think you should get some por-15 inside the doors. thats what i did. just brush it around (you will find that there is alot of surface rust in your doors) and clean out hte bottom-inside of the door and get that really good with the por-15.

didnt even think about por-15-ing the inside of the cab corners :maybe:
yeah i know i have alot of junk in their too. they also rust because the corners act as a mudflap. i did notice that when i was looking behind the seat of my 71, that there looked to be either sound deadener or rust killer brushed around in there. ill have to do some investigating.
