grey primer better???

Post by 67 ford f100s rule »

I have Jeanne in a currently primer red livery.I was wondering if using grey would be a better idea(to form a good base for my real automotive paint).

Here is the filler primer and filler i have done to get part of the bed straight. Image

jeff, after you get done with all your body work and your done blocking the primer you can prime over the whole truck with either color primer to make one uniform color then wetsand the primer with 400 to 600 grit using a guide coat, and then if you sand through the final prime coat, you can get a primer sealer and spray that over the whole truck, let it flash dry (no sanding) and then you can paint your base and clear over that in one day... hope i have helped

I don't like to use red oxide primer because it makes it hard to see any rust. I prefer grey.

just my 2 cents of course.

I was told once by a painter to use the color thats closest to the color paint you will paint the car or truck in this case. I have also been told that a paint will look different over grey as opposed to black primer, but I have not seen this difference in person.

Well, if I were you, i'd use the grey primer where you want the green to go, and use white primer where the white paint will be. That way, if you chip the paint, it's not as noticeable.

just my :2cents:

red oxide primers are "metal etching" and should only be applied over bare steel. Grey primers are typically "primer/surfacers" that are a high build and are used to fill the heavier sanding scratchs from previous steps.
Your primer color really doesn't matter. With the proper amount of paint applied your not going to see the primer thats under the paint unless your using a transparent paint. Which your not.
Your better off using a dark color primer/surfacer with a light color paint to ensure that you have good paint coverage..

he is right, apply the "metal etching" primer over your whole truck after all the body work is done then over that use your primer/surfacer...

Do WHAT????

Etch primer has a chemical added to it to actually "etch" the metal & supposedly give the primer a "tooth" to grip the substrate. Color non withstanding.

Red primer, grey primer, hell, snot green primer......it don't matter.None have specific properties, other than color. If you dont get something over it...quickly, you will find that primer acts as a sponge, and will draw moisture thru it and trap it between your primer & nice bare metal. Not a good idea.

If you want it sealed, an epoxy primer is the only way to go, IMHO.

Primer color really doesnt matter???? Dark Primer & light paint?????

Not on my ride. If you want black you can dive into, dark primer. If you want white /red to come alive, white primer.

metal etch over body work???? Etch over plastic???

Wrong again.

If "etch"primer can etch it's way into metal, just think what it can do to plastic

Sand / strip the area you're going to work. Epoxy over it, to keep it sealed. Do your bodywork, the filler will adhere to the epoxy. Sand, dust a light coat of epoxy. Out into the sun to "bake" . In the booth the next day.

I use red/brown Spies Hecker 3255 which is metal etch and also contains zinc to help prevent rust.
I never said to spray plastic with it.
Next would be 5310 2K which is epoxy primer, light grey or grey.
final primer surfacer Vario 8590 also 2 part. Colors are light grey or buff.
Spies 293 series base coat is a high solid, covers a lot better than any other PPG or RM product, and is not at all transparent so will make no difference in your finished product.
So, different products have different characteristics.
Bottom line, follow what the manufacturer recommends.

Use what ever color primer you want. If your gonna go back red with your paint then use a tintable sealer and the problem is solved. With a tintable sealer you tint it to the color that your using.
