What is this?

Post by CO684X4 »

I think this is the place to put this. I have been working on stripping the frame down and getting it ready for paint. I found these numbers and letters on the frame. What do they mean? I found them stamped on the drivers side frame rail towards the front where the bumper is mounted. I know its no the VIN they are on the otherside. Oh I also noticed a metal tag that is wrapped around the springs on the bech seat that has a bunch of numbers on it what are those for? Here are the numbers that are on the frame.

The "buck tag" found on seats was installed by Ford's outside seat supplier. Ford didn't make these seats or upholster them "in house."

When the upholstered seats arrived at assembly plants, Ford workers could tell from the numbers on these buck tags what seats were used in which models.

That frame number does not ID the frame as per the parts catalog.

The frame ID number will be something like this: C7TA-AA followed by the build date. It's stamped (usually) on the passenger side outer front frame rail.

That number stamped on the frame is the outside supplier's ID number.

That's right..outside supplier, Ford outsourced these, too. It's prolly from Budd, or American Frame & Axle.

Does the seat tag look like this paper one?

Here's a couple seat tags from parts trucks of mine:

Those are the only kinds I'd ever seen until this past summer, when I was photographing a nice low-mileage '71 with this one:

This is the first time I've ever seen a paper version. Interesting!
