Coating Inner Fenders?

Post by farmtruckman »

I am about to sandblast inner surfaces on front fenders on my 67 and was planning on coating them afterwards with POR15. Friend restoring Chevy tells me not to use POR15 but to just use automotive primer. Any suggestions?

Also, on Chevy's, bolts under hood were cadmium plated and Eastwood sells imitation cadmium spray paint to make bolts look new. What kind of finish did Ford put on their bolts back then. I am just looking at sprucing things up under the hood after the fenders are painted.

Thanks for help.

did he say what was wrong with por-15?? the only problem i know of is that you dont want to expose it to sunlight for long periods of time since its uv sensitive.

but there are lots of people that have done the por-15 and i was gonna go that route myself.
I believe that ford used "just automotive primer" and look at how bad they rusted. A properly coated por-15 fender has a much less chance of rusting out

I used Eastwood Rust Encapsulator on mine...
It is pretty much the same as Por 15, but is not UV sensitive.
It dries a nice flat black that does not require a top coat.
I did spray a satin black semi-gloss top coat on mine.

I really like Eastwood products and have had real good luck with them so far.

i just automotive primer then rubberized coated it.I trhink that will work fine for me here in Indiana.I then flat blacked it.I think any good rust prevention technique will be fine. But just primer is not the best approach.

I agree....I'm confused why someone would tell you to not paint the fenderwell with something proven to stop rust, and instead paint it with something that's not water-resistant and will definitely cause it to rust in the future. :hmm: (But then I saw where you said he was a Ch*vy man, and I suddenly understood.)

I sandblasted my inner fenders and then used POR-15 on the bottom side and Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator on the tops....just so I could do a performance comparison. Unfortunately, my truck hasn't seen the streets since I did that, so there's no update.

hey Keith...

I'd be real curious to see how that test comes out.
Ive had good luck with Eastwood products in general, because of that, I've never used Por15.
I know Por15 is good product because you and several others have given it a good report.
I trust that more than any sales propaganda.

that sounds rediculous, why use just primer (known to absorb water) instead of por-15 which is amazing rockhard rust proof stuff
like said before, primer is what was used on our trucks from the factory and its obviously rusted. that gets me thinking, wouldnt it be cool if ford happened to make a por-15 undercoated bump so we could see a really cool comparison :D
