Tilt Wheel

Post by bwc302 »

While roaming around one of the local wrecking yards today I ran across a 78 with the column and wheel still in place (most are always gone). Wondering if this was perhaps a tilt column I started looking around it and did not see how you make these columns tilt. So the obvious question for the gang is, who is the tilt activated on these model trucks? I thought it was by pushing back or pulling forward on the turn signal handle. I didn't want to start pushing or pulling against this thing to hard that I snapped the turn signal lever off :)

Thanks,

Bobby

Tilts were usually in Rangers or XLT's, that one might still be there because it's not a tilt.

IIRC, you push on the turn signal stalk. It might be sticking, the wheel is spring-loaded to tilt up, try a little downward force on the wheel to relieve the preload while you push on the turn signal.

You can see if it's a tilt, look where the stalk goes into the column. There is a pin or rod running vertically that the stalk pushes against to activate the tilt mechanism.

"Are you gonna make it all 220?"
"Yeah 220, 221, whatever it takes."

I did not see a pin on the column as you described so it may be a non tilt (which was my first guess), but figured I would ask.

So do the non tilt wheels have a piece below the collar that angles? That is the part that through me visually. The yard is about 30 miles away from me, so I will try and get back out there tomorrow.

Thanks for the information.

Here's what a '78-'79 tilt column looks like:

Like Barry mentioned, you have to pull the turn signal stalk towards you (as you're sitting in the seat). You can see in the pic above just where it tilts.

Thanks Keith, the picture helps as well. The column angle looks like the picture, but again not knowing the direction to push or pull I didn't want to push my luck. I will get back down that way and check it out in more detail.
