Hello!
I'm looking at the 400HP FE from Proformanceunlimited for my F250, and I'm curious to know what type of gas mileage to expect. Just a ballpark figure would be of great interest, since I know a more specific estimate requires factoring in driveline specs and driving habits.
What's the typical mileage range to expect from a ~400HP FE in an F250? Is it 4-8MPG, 8-12, or 10-15?

I am in the 8-12 mpg range with a stock 360 so I don't think you would be doing any better than that.robroy wrote:Hello!

Tons of variables play into it, mostly driving style. If you're good and I mean you know how to get several MPG better than your buddies driving the same thing you might squeak low teens out of it. Expect 12 as an average for mixed driving if you're good.
If you have a heavy foot and you like short trips or just plain get worse mileage in what you drive than most do then expect 4-6 MPG.
With a nice 375 (thereabouts) HP 390 in my 7000 pound lifted 1970 F-250 4x4 I could manage 15 on the freeway at 60 MPH for long trips. Short trips and letting her breathe now and then would cut it down to 5 MPG at best.
The biggest thing I've come to realize about big blocks is there is a night and day difference between the mileage they will get when fully up to temp VS what they get cold. It took 25 miles of freeway driving on an 80 degree day to get that 390 all the way to temp. So for a ballpark figure, if your driving plans will be less than 25 miles you'll get crap mileage. Longer drives you'll notice much better numbers.

It sounds like I can expect 4-8 when I'm playing with it and 8-12 when I'm driving along nice and steady (and it's warmed up). That sounds great to me!
Dustin, that's interesting about how much better the mileage gets when the thing warms up. I'll have to pay attention to this to see if mine's the same.
