PS conversion linkage

Post by albertv78 »

I went to the junkyard and got a Saginaw PS box, pump, and steering column off a 71 f250 to put in my 70 f100.
Heres what I got:

I didn't get the steering linkages because they were worn. I read the how to posted on here but i got a few questions. Can i use my old steering linkages? Will the pitman arm from my manual box fit the Saginaw box? If I need different steering linkages does anyone were to buy them? If I'm going to replace them I would rather buy them new than go scavenging for used worn out linkages (draglink,etc..)
Thanks,
Albert

It depends entirely on whether the '71 is an early or late model.

The Pitman arm and linkage changed mid-year, so if the donor vehicle is an early-'71, the Pitman arm on that PS box will work with your existing steering linkage. If the donor truck was a late-'71, then you'll either need to find the early Pitman arm to work with your existing steering linkage, or get all new steering linkage to match up with the Pitman arm.

No.

I would think any major parts supplier could get that drag link and tie-rod ends. When I rebuilt the front end on my '67, I got the polygraphite front-end kit from PST ( http://www.p-s-t.com ). When I got mine the drag link was available as part of the kit, but it doesn't appear to be true anymore....at least it doesn't show on their site.

Also, you don't appear to have gotten all the bracketry to mount the pump to the block. It's a two-piece bracket set, and you've only got one (as pictured, anyway).

According to your Steering/Suspension Component Variations page I believe I have the older style flatter pitman arm which should bolt up to my existing linkage (i think). You are correct on the PS pump bracket missing a piece because I took the pump of an FE engine and I have 302 small block. I am currently sourcing the correct pump bracket (anyone feel free to chime in if you have one available).

So this stuff should be all I need right????? (other than the correct ps bracket and crank pulley)
Thanks,
Albert

Yep, looks like you've got everything. If the 302 in your '70 is factory, then you should already have the correct offset engine stands to clear the steering box.

Good luck!
