Are power steering lines supposed to be pretty hot?

Post by mrtleavitt »

I just changed the cooling system on my saginaw power steering pump from the traditional finned oil cooler to the '73-'79 system with the "s" shaped cooler down by the frame. I didn't pay much attention before but now my power steering lines are almost as hot as my heater hoses. I ran the truck and filled the pump with oil. Are they supposed to get that hot? This cooling system will work just as good as the original right?

I don't know the exact temps that the PS system runs, but they do create a lot of heat, hence the requirement for a cooler. if no cooler, the oil will burn just like tranny oil.

The pressures in a PS system can be as high as 2000psi. Anytime you compress anything that much (air, water, oil) it's going to get hot. :)
