What is the best size welding wire to use?

Post by JWW »

Hey guys, I've been searching on the correct wire size to use in my mig welder. I bought it weld in cab corners, mounts, floor pans, etc. I will be doing a lot of practicing.

My question is, what is the best size to use? I bought some .030, but I thought I would get some advice from you all.

Thanks

.030 From what i've herd is the most universal wire size used. I'm using .035 because that's what size my welder came with, but maby someone with more welding experince will tell you better.

I disagree.

.023 is the right size for sheet metal. Any bigger and you will run the risk of too much heat and burning thru, as well as warpage.

I used to use .030, but since I switched my welds have become better and less 'post-welding work'.

If you are going to do thicker metal .030 or .035 will be better suited.

When I was working in a shipyard in Japan, they were using 9mm (1/3") wire in their migs for welding ships together...

I run .030 flux-core welding wire. I like flux core cuz I don't have to buy gas and can weld outside :2cents:
