Hi...I'm Donnie from NC...and I'm ADD...with a long story.
First off I'd like to say that this board stinks. I've only been lurking around for the past 2 weeks reading up on everything under the sun. You people are enablers...making me think about ways to spend money that I would have otherwise put into some kind of retirement account. All I wanted was to remodel my [censored]...now I have a '72 Sport Custom in about 1000 pieces!
I'll back up a little. I started getting tired of borrowing my buddy's truck every time I had to go to Lowe's Hardware to get something that wouldn't fit in my Maxima. So, 2 weeks ago I spotted what looks like a good truck to become my beater. It had a fresh blue rattle-can paint job and almost new tires. It also had a dead battery and a worn out C4. $500. I know nothing about these trucks except it had a brand new Edelbrock Performer carb and intake. And some headers...yippee! I bought it.
I had it hauled to my uncle's house to rebuild the trans. Out, rebuilt and back in less than a day and it works perfectly. Well, then I noticed it was missing. Checked everything and finally had to pull the heads. 2 burnt valves and the rest were sunk way up in the heads. Took them to the machinist who quoted $600 to fix them. They needed new guides, seats, valves...everything. Well...now I have 2 nice and shiny aluminum heads sitting on my new granite countertops waiting to be installed on my freshly bored .030 over 302 block. New everything including stainless fasteners!
While waiting on the machine shop, I decided to clean up a little under the hood. Ooh...is that rust I see? The whole frontend was held together by rust. Off to the parts yard near my uncles house. Found a '72 XLT with very nice inner fenders and radiator support. Got it for $50. Oh, it had power steering too. Snagged the power column and gearbox for another $75. Still trying to find the brackets and pump. Pulled the front off my truck and noticed that the front cab supports were gone. It sitting on some wood jammed between the floor and the frame! What if I went around a curve to fast and the cab just rolled off the frame...it might hurt. Went back to the junk-yard to inspect the cab on the XLT. Perfect. Got the cab and doors for $300. They are almost perfect. Small dent in the top of the cab that I can probably pop out with my fist. No rust!
It wouldn't have been nearly as bad had I not found this board. I wouldn't have known to look at cab supports, how easy it is to change over to power steering, where to look for rust....oh...and now I know about those dropped I-Beams and how cool these 'bump-sides' really are! Ooh...and I'm so smart now from reading all these posts for hours and hours and not sleeping. And I'm loosing weight from all this hard work. I'm gonna need that fat come winter time when I can't afford to heat the house because of all these parts I'm having to buy!
So, I'm gonna takes some pictures as soon as I can and show you what a mess y'all have made of my peaceful life. All I wanted was to finish my [censored]! Maybe next week.
In summation, this board sucks...but, I think I love you guys...how messed-up is that?
Peace,
Donnie

Sounds like a good project....
You'll see..
It seems you have been bitten by the ford truck bug... A year from now your post will be " Bought Another Bump or a dent or a slick.. I'm sorry to break the news, but so far there is not yet a cure for the sickness. Personally I have owned 9 ford trucks and have three now.nekbyte wrote:how messed-up is that?

Thanks Guys. At least now I know that I'm not alone in this. At least it will be worth $35-40K when I've got it in primer right Now I have to go look for another one so I can haul the parts around.
cathynkeith - That is one sweet truck! It's definitely worth it! I'll be happy with half the truck you have.
jwh f-100 - That's a nice motor you have there! Yea...I think I have the bug, but the cure will come... when my credit card is maxed out
I've just got to get at least one project completed. I'm taking this weekend to finish up the [censored]. I had to make a bet with a buddy to motivate me. His 12 pack against my $100 that I would finish this weekend. I started 3 years ago. Then to finish the bathroom. I started it 2 years ago. Then finish the truck. Then finish the '57 Skyliner that I inherited from my dad.
Working on these old cars is better than sitting around watching the world go by!

Hi and welcome from Pennsylvania.
Old Fords are a disease. I hope no one finds a cure.

I was 'infected' 21 years ago when I got my '56 at the tender age of 15! I've still got that one and am quickly falling for my '69 too! The '69 is staying low budget for now until I get my '56 done but then who knows. I'm sure I won't stop playin' with these old trucks even then. The '69 is destined for a total rebuild starting just before the paint is dry on the '56!
Anyway, welcome to the site from Idaho! Let's see some pics when you get a chance.
