Pinch weld seam on firewall
I have started slowly scraping / cleaning the firewall of the 68 again and I noticed the pinch weld seam has been rusting a little and is swelling. I started to clean it out best as possible and was wondering what I should use to eliminate or cover the rust I can not get to and also what is best to seal it back up. I was thinking of using some sord of adhesive to bond it and seal it. Thanks for the help.

you might consider POR-patch. It's POR (Paint over rust) product and is a black goop like seam sealer. I'd degrease the area, clean it best I can and use POR patch.
If I didn't want to spend that much, I'd clean it and then use chimney sealing stuff in a tube from Lowe's, I use it alot. Seals great, seals out air/water. It's very reasonably priced.

Thanks. That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. This build has turned into a penny pinching build. Instead of making it almost a show piece, it is going to be a nice daily driver. Can the chimney sealer be painted over or does it stay tacky, kind of like a tar type sealer.
Are there any other products other than POR-15 that work well also for covering rust?

Rust Bullet is sopposed to be good also.I used Rustoleum rusty metal primer on the frame of my DD a few years ago.I painted over it with Rustoleum black enamel. It's holding up fine.

It my experience that this rust on the firewall seam is coming from crap build up in the space beneath the window wipers. Clean that out with a water jet, let it dry, and then rust convertor on the area's affected on the firewall.
Then lather it in fish oil ...... including in the grill area below the windscreen. Use a hand pump spray gun.

I will definately clean that area out as soon as I can roll it outside. So, the fish oil stuff really works, does it have any smell or is it odorless?smclaren wrote:It my experience that this rust on the firewall seam is coming from crap build up in the space beneath the window wipers. That might be why Rustoleum holds up.One of it's ingredients is fish oil.
