Power steering pully & belt mismatch

Post by f350dumper »

I have '67 F350 that I am trying to add power steering to. The problem is originally this truck has a 2 belt system that goes to the alternator. I bolted up the power steering pump & it lines up with the front pulley. No problem, I pull off the front belt & try to find one that fits. The parts counter gives me the wrong belt :o it is too short. But when I tried it I noticed the pulley on the power steering pump is wider than the pulley on the harmonic balancer & water pump.

The belt does go around the harmonic balancer & water pump, correct?

Sooo, do I need to change the pulley on the power steering pump or :?

Thanks for your help!!

Hey f350dumper...

here's a pic of PS belt w/o a/c
if you can't get the right belt...
take a piece of string and run it around the pully's like this to get the length you need...

Thanks guys. I think I have my problem figured out. I don't have ac, but I have an ac style bracket & pump. The pump lines up on the second pulley, which is a different width pulley than is on my pump. I am not using (don't have) the 3rd pulley.

The belts are a different width, so can I change the pulley? Where can I get just a pulley? Or do I need to get a different bracket & pulley combination?

I also have an a/c type bracket...
If you are just talking about belt width...
I would just go with the width of the narrower pully...
I can't imagine that the other pully would be so much wider that it would cause a problem...

Thank you! I am just worried that the belt will bottom out & give me that nasty squeal when doing a turn. At least now I know why the belt was too short, I need one for a truck with ac.

The pictures were perfect by the way. You have an extra pulley on the front that I do not have. My power steering pump pulley lines up with the alternator pulley closest to the radiator.

I think I will get a belt for a truck with ac & give it a shot.

Any idea how much power steering fluid I need to fill the system?

yes just change the pulley. there can be some squealing issuses with a mismatched pulley. i think i read that on here a while back. something about a v grooved pulley and a flat bottomed pulley for fords.

hmmmm... :maybe:

You might have a point there Fordman...I didn't think about that...
I didn't know Ford used differant type pulleys

Both the pulleys, the pump and the mounting brackets I used when I did the PS ugrade came off of the same truck...
So they were probably all the same type...
even the alternator came off of the '71 CS donor truck

From the sound of this I think you have a pulley for a 70 and newer car as they used a wider belt for the PS and it will line up with the middle groove on a three belt system just like an AC vehicle would be. I will wagerthat your pulley has a part number stamped into it like D0AR-A or D0OR-A. The correct pulley for your truck would be a deep one marked AG (but a 6AA will work fine as well but then you need to find a correct crank pulley (I do have one for sale though! LOL). If you want to keep using the groove you are on look for a 7AA, 7AE, AF, or AE pulley as they are common and any of them would work fine. Hawkrod
