Questain about proportioning valve?

Post by 1985183 »

My November 1973 F-100 proportioning valve started leaking. Ive located some used valves in Salvage but they arent for a 73. Can i use a valve from a truck thru the 70s and even into the 80s? I dont care about being exactly the same but will others work, internally? Thanks in advance

Yes, as long as the truck has the same setup, anything up to '79 should work just fine. For example if you have front discs, the junk truck should have disc brakes too. Also it would have to be a 5-lug truck if you have a 5-lug truck, or 8-lug if you have an 8-lug setup.

Yes, thats what I was wondering about. My truck is 5 lug. Are the valves for 8 lug different bore size or otherwise wont work functionally? Also, does it make any difference if the rear brake cylinders are a different bore size? I guess if it comes push to shove, i can use an adjustable valve i got for a car project. Id rather go Ford OEM though. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, the 8-lug have a double piston disc brake setup so that would cause problems with your 5-lug, single piston setup. I'm not sure about the bore size for the rear cylinders. I'd imagine that the same idea applies but I'm not sure.

You need one from a F-100/150 73-79.

Where is yours leeking? You should be able to take it appart and re-seal it.

Some F150s had the double piston caliper so be sure not to get one of those.

Thanks for the replies. The calipers are single piston. The valve is leaking out the switch on top. While you might could reseal it, where would you find the seals? Besides its a whole lot easier just to change out the whole valve assy. (if the new one doesnt leak too)
