friendly advise on rear shocks

Post by SteveC »

I was under my truck tonight inspecting the shocks to see how bad there looked when i saw this

serveral people may already know this but Make sure that the rubber piece is around the parking brake cable were it is touching the shock. No wonder the rear end was making so much noise when I hit every bump

Mine will not touch it since the previous owner used fencing wire and tied it out of the way.

The front shocks are pretty much stuck and hardly move at all.

well i replaced those shocks today that one with the hole in it was shot and i mean you push on it and there is no rebound at all and it goes down fast... the rest of the shocks we about stuck stiff.

I'm not surprised that shock was bad, it looks original.

But as an FYI not all shocks rebound when compressed. Only gas charged shocks do this and old cars and trucks didn't come stock with gas charged shocks.

learned something new today then....i put some gas charged shocks on it.
And ya grandpa never replaced something even if it broke. The back brakes werent working and from the looks of it they handnt for a long long time. Im not a bit surpised that they are original.

LOL, when I bought my '69 all 4 drums were metal to metal. Been that way for some time too, the drums were tore up and even the metal on the shoes where the brake material had been was getting thin.
Had two leaky wheel cylinders too. The thing still stopped, but man talk about pressing your luck.

wow they shoes are a little wore but the front have about half their pad and the rears were almost new. both cylinders were stuck and had to be replaced. the drums them selves were not wore but will need to be replaced in a few years.

NO WERE near as bad as the ltd the rear drums were paper thin and one was cracked in half...and the disk pads up front were almost metal to metal he had bent the tabs on them off to stop them squeaking grandpa was driving it like this

When i start auto class this fall and we get to brakes ill teach people how to redo 4 wheel drum brakes
