Inner fender

Post by Teacherman »

OK, I finally managed to get my hands on a decent inner fender (I love it when people misspell things on eBay. It keeps the competition down). Is this something an average driveway mechanic, with NO welding skills, equipment, knowledge, etc., can tackle, or should I take it to a professional? From what I can see and have read, it looks like a series of bolts. Is there anything I'm overlooking? Any tricks?

Thanks.

They should bolt right on. I have taken them off and you are correct just a series of bolts. I have never put one on but putting it on is just tightening the bolts down. Will have to remove the hood to make it easier to take off.

Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0220498020

I'm getting the mechanic I work with to weld a piece of metal over the hole for free (he likes me because I teach at his daughter's former middle school). The next question I have is the apron -- it looks like I'll have to replace it. The existing one is a bit ragged. How do I attach a new one? Adhesive? Screws?

I picked up a 1969 428 CobraJet carb a few years ago, complete and in decent shape, for $9.99 (opening bid) plus shipping because the seller called it a "holey" instead of Holley. No "carb" or "ford" or "CobraJet" or anything in the title OR the description. Just "1969 Holey".

Turned around a couple weeks later and sold it for $175.00 or so.

Hey Teacherman...

You'll have to remove both the hood and the outer fender to remove the old inner fender and install the new one...
I am assuming that it is the p.side one you're replacing.
If so, you also need to remove the battery and the support and undo the bolts that hold the cylinoid and horn relay.
you don't have to disconnect anything (except the battery of course) they can just hang there until you get the new one in...
you might also need to remove the regulator...
I can't remember if the inner fender will come out with it installed or not...
When I replaced mine, I also replaced the radiator support and had to remove everything else too.
There is also one wire that goes through the inner fender to the front side marker light... that should have a bullet connecter at the light, and a cone type rubber gromet where it goes through the inner fender...
You'll need a helper to help ya with the hood, that suckers heavy and hard to hold in place to get the bolts back in.
It's a pretty good one day job... well worth it
Good luck,

I may end up doing this with a mechanic next weekend. He suggested bringing the truck over and using an engine hoist to hold the hood so I wouldn't have to remove it completely, just from the passenger side. That would be nice because I suspect the hood weighs 70 or 80+ pounds.

Hey Teacherman,
Outer fender took me about 2 hours what with all the hidden bolts.

Definately get help with the hood - a 5'2 100lb wife is not enough help for getting back on!

How do I know?

Two hours just to take the outer fender off? Sounds like this job is going to cost me some serious beer. It'll be worth it, I suppose, if for no other reason than to get rid of that plastic tub that is passing for a battery tray right now.

teacherman. the reason it takes so long is because of the rusty bolts. if you can spray them down and let them soak for a few days that might help.
