Cowl Leaking Water
Hey all, Ive been inside all winter but need to start a new project. Everytime it rains hard I get sitting watter on my floor boards. The windsheild is sealed up but water seams to come in were the wiper shafts pass through the cowl. Can this be fixed with windsheild adhesive? I think there may be debris in the cowl on the far L/R end, any tricks on removal?
Thanks
Nick

I would suggest that you get a light and a extra person to run water over the truck in the front area windshield also. Is the windshield sealed on both the glass and body sides? If only the glass side then it could still leak from the body side. It could be getting in from up higher and running down in between the sheets at the bottom. But this is how we always tested for leaks any where on the car in our body shop. If it is leaking from where you think it is you need to get a very small butyl ribbon to put under them. Try a local body shop supply or a shop to see if they can supply you with what you need. If not you can use window ribbon and cut short sections and roll it like clay to make it smaller. Then just mold it to the shape you want.

That is exactly where water was running in to my cab. Where the passenger side wiper shaft penetrated the firewall... I used 3M windshield gasket sealer and it's sealed it for now. That's not really a good way to do it and makes a mess but I didn't have the proper gasket, had just finished my floorpans, and had a monsoon coming... If you are not in a rush and determine that is where the water is entering I would definitely order the gasket. You have to loosen the bolts anyway... It was easy to see where it was coming in by laying on the floor and getting someone else to hose it down on the outside.

Butyle tape (window ribbon) looks like the best fix for this one. No water is coming in from around the windsheild as best as I can tell. I used water colored with bright red food coloring to find the leak.

Yes thats my truck in the link the new gaskets only costed 12 bucks for the pair and they work. I live about 10 miles from classic and obsolete auto parts where I got them from if you want to save on shipping I can pick some up for you and mail them with cardboard in an envelope then it would only cost 43 cents for shipping.

I removed the wiper arms and unbolted the shaft assemblies from the cowl this past weekend. The original gaskets look to have been cork. They were crispy like potato chips. I placed window ribbon around the shaft opening and around the diamond shaped out line of the housing flange. I also removed the fresh vents and pulled out 3 handfulls of mulch like debris from te passenger side. Luckily the metal was solid and smooth. Everything as far as I can reach is hosed out and clean. I shouldn't see any more water in the cab.
Thanks
