stripping to metal before POR-15...

Im definitly going to strip to metal the underside of the truck and chassis, but for inner fenders, do you think it would be alot better if i stripped them to metal before applying por-15?
there is no rust on the fenders, just some grease and dirt. think it would be almost as good if i just sanded them down alittle and applied por-15?

In my opinion, I dont think Por15 is good for everything. Its real hard and durable when its put on surface rust, and thats about it. It acts funny sometimes over clean metal, paint. If its not rust, I would use the conventional methods, ie., cleaning, sanding, repainting.

I never like to go down to bare metal. That automatically gives a head start to rust. If you clean, sand and feather the paint, you are ahead of the game.

also, do you think it would be better to not go down to metal on the chassis and unside of body too?

I painted the inside of my doors with Rust Bullet. Some parts where rusty but most parts weren't. I lightly sanded, cleaned real well and it is on there rock solid. I highly recommend this for places like you want to paint. Inside wheel wells, frames and places that take a beating from weather, rocks and grime. Much harder and durable than paint and is "not" UV sensitive like por-15.

I haven't used POR-15 but from what I have read I think rust bullet is a much better product. Rust bullet now comes in automotive black. Perfect for your application.

When you sand old paint to prepare it for a repaint, you would want to do it with at least 220 grit paper. You will sand every sq. inch, no shortcuts - its ALL in the detail of the sanding/preparation of the surface. Basically the smoothness of the sanding is the smoothness of the finished paint surface you will get. The paint will reveal every scratch in the surface. When you sand it this perfectly, your sanding will smooth out any chips, spots of rust, and there will be spots that goes through to bare metal, this will be the "feathering" of the paint edges and chips, etc.

all there is on the rust-bullet site is grey
maybe black will be at a local napa or kragen. ill check.

i am going to go down to bare metal when i do my inners so i can get the best protection i can on them. those are one of the things on these trucks that need losts of protection. besides the cabmounts and floors.

where i live rust isnt a problem (the reason im POR-15'ing this truck is to increase value, and so ill never have to deal with rust if i moved or even if i put alot of miles on the truck here)
but fordman, cant you grind the bottom side to bare metal and POR-15 that, and just sand the paint on the top and POR-15 that or even paint it? it would save you time and innerfenders rust out from the bottom because of the spat up water right?

allright, so for the frame, underbed, and undercab, should i spend the time stripping it all down to metal? or should i sand it and POR-15 over without the POR-15 coming off in any way or anything?
rust isnt a big problem here although i would still want the POR-15 to do its job.
what would you do for frame/underbed/undercab?

the really imporant things ill strip to metal like cab mounts, floorboards, etc.

ill use por-15 on all chassis and in the doors, and rustbullet anywhere that may be in the sun.
