Remote hood release?

Post by FORDification »

Has anyone ever installed some kind of cable-operated hood release, similar to that on newer vehicles? The thought just crossed my mind that I might be interested in trying to set something like this up for my truck to protect the underhood goodies. I'll have to do some comparisons of other vehicles to see what can be made to work.

Mr. F at fomoco.com tipped me off on a vintage hood lock that was an OTC accessory for our year trucks and was on ebay awhile ago. I won it, it's cherry with gaskets and two original keys but I haven't hooked it up yet. Can't figure how it ties into the hood latch, think maybe I'm missing something. It looks kinda similar to the releases used on the later trucks.

Keith, while you're waiting I searched my old ebay items and here was the auction:

And here is where Mr. F spills the beans (of course after I did a BIN):

Cool! Thanks for the link. I've never seen one of those before. I think I might have done the BIN option as well. Good score!

I'd be interested in seeing how that thing hooks up, and what makes it so that you can't still open if from the outside.

My best friend is a fellow Ford Truck lover, but he chose the 73-79 F150 route. He has a 78 that has a remote, locking hood release. It wasn't common, but not all that rare on those trucks. It mounted under the dash, is keyed to the ignition and is a simple key turn, pull, release method.

I have one of them somewhere that I scrounged from a junkyard, the only problem is fabbing it up to work with our hood release. In 73-79 the mechanism is in the Upper Valance, and the latching rods are in the hood. Our trucks are the exact opposite, mechanism on the hood, and latching rods in the Valance.

I'll try to find it and post a picture, and if I ever figure out a way I will take pictures and let you know.

I had one from a 79 parts truck. Thing was that the cable was damaged. I couldn't figure how to get it to work due to the differences already mentioned. not sure if I kept the parts or not. Probably not. It would be nice to have one.

Keith, I,ve been thinking about locking my hood as well and the best I can come up with is to attach the cable to the existing main hood release and when it is adjusted right just cut off the handle we would normaly use. That way it has to be opened with the cable from inside the cab and then when we get out we just pull the emergency handle and it opens.

Only problem is the cable release attaches to the hood release mechanism. On our trucks it's on the hood, on the 73-79 its on the valance. So if you attach the cable to our existing release mechanism the cable would have to move and come up with the hood.

I plan on experimenting to see if the 73-79 Valance and hood release mechanism can be swapped, modified on our trucks.. Will post what I found out and pictures.

Anyone feel like trying to come up with a "Shaved handle" hood? You know get rid of all the opening latches, and use the remote button which uses a shaved handle kit?

I have thrown down the gauntlet, pick it up if you dare! But watch out for that headache hanging down from the hood while you work on it.

Patrick

P.S. Here is a picture of the non-locking remote release for those who haven't seen it. You'll have to use your imagination abou the locking part till I can find mine. This is a pic from ebay.

This question is for Keith or any other knowledgable person. I know that the radiator support will swap out between the bump sides, and the dent sides (73-79). Will the upper valance swap out as well? In planning out the remote locking hood release I found that this will be the easiest way. If the upper valance will swap out then its pretty much a piece of cake.

You have to use the 73-79 latch mechanism, and since it bolts to the valance, and the rods mount to the hood (opposite of our truck) then if you can swap out the whole valance and latch mechanism, getting the rods to bolt up to the hood should be a piece of cake.
