My truck had a camper shell on it before the cover. The shell is about the same age as the truck and it's pretty heavy. It seems to get better mileage but I'd know if it's from less wind drag or less weight. :hmm:

i saw a guy going down the highway one year and had hay bails in the back trafiic was about 75 mph. well, one of these bails lifted up and flew out of the back. the gate was up as well. what i'm sayin is that there is no real drag in the bed of a truck. the air spins in the bed. the drag is in the front of the vehicle. a cover is more for protecting the truck bed.

The one on Mythbusters showed that having the tailgate closed (up) was better then open (Down) as the air did spin in the bed like Hotrod Ford was saying. They showed how this air spinning in there helped pass the air over the cab and out over the back of the tailgate...

Now they didn't show how it would fare with a cover but I would think it would help. :dk: maybe we should email Mythbusters to try this out with cover or shell on a truck and see if they do it. :)

I agree. I think they found that tailgate down/better mileage was indeed a myth on the show.
Good idea Thunderfoot on emailing the show to do a comparison with a cover.
The covers in that link look like good stuff and I like the idea of keeping water out of the bed!

Just a little on Sportsmaster.
I put one on my 99 SuperDuty, perfect fit.
After the second winter some cracks started to develope and the vinyl was delaminating in spots.
Now keep in mind, it's 2 years old.
I called the 1-800 number on the tag and told them about the problem. They ask for the serial#, and if I could email pics and I did.
Once they had the pics they informed me I'd have a "NEW" cover in 10 day's or less
Great customer service!!
