Ignition Lock

Anybody know how to break the ignition lock on a 1990 Ford Bronco with titl steering?

I acquired the vehicle from a fellow Soldier...unfortuneatley he is in Iraq and his keys are in storage in Michigan. To add to the craziness, the Police tagged it as abandoned and will tow it in 72 hours from today...

I have a new ignition cylinder to put in it, but can't get the old one out. I have no official paperwork on the truck yet, so the local locksmith won't help due to "liability".


I have no background in "breaking the ignition cylinder" and have no clue.

Any Guidance?

After you get the Plastic covers off, you should fine a 3/16"ish hole on the under side of the lock cylinder housing. This hole is for the cylinder lock button. you will need to drill this button bye bye. once you do that you can easily pop the cylinder out w/ a small slide hammer breaking the "T" off the end of the cylinder. Fish broken piece out w/ needle nose pliers. Ok now the new cylinder goes in w/ key in and in run position, but your switch is in off position, you need to turn it to run position w/ bent rod or screw driver.
This task is a pain in the A**, It would be worth a try to rake the tumblers till you can turn the switch to run. then just push the button slide old cylinder out slide new one in. hope this helps.

Oh well, I was thinking more about the bronco than the posting.

I'll give it a whirl tomorrow, see how it works out.

Crazy huh? I went to the General Discussion and was looking and looking for my post to see if anyone replied....I was thinking "What in the world happened"...then I recalled welcoming some folks before posting...the rest is history.

I was gonna suggest the slide hammer method also. But i was gonna say take a pair of channel locks and turn the butterfly off the end and screw the slide hammer in good and tight then yank it hard and fast. I dont remember if it was the ford or the gm's that had the hardened pins in the ignition. You might have to use the channel locks to get it good and tight. But im leaning towards the fords having the hardened pis so i would drill it like the other member says. just make sure you have a very sharp bit to drill with and use a punch to mark it with so it stays in place. I hope this info helps and that it works out ok for you.

I did not get to it yet...crazy Army expects you to work when they tell you to...been late getting off every day this week.

I'm going to hit it Thursday evening with the drill.

Turns out the towing contract for the post expired, so I have a few days to play with.

Also, I found the title in the truck, so all I have to do is wait for previous owner to come home on R&R and sign it over to me. Sweet. it takes an eternity to file for lost title in Louisiana.
