how to buy paint...

Post by 1971ford »

second, which do i want for painting the 69 with out of these? acrylic enamel right?
Acrylic Enamel
Acrylic Urethane
Acrylic Lacquer
Urethane Basecoat

half way down the page, their is the ppg stuff (the stuff i want 8) )

what is EA under Uom? in the discription it says "GL" so i presume its a gallon but whats ea?

and under "PPG Suggested Hardeners" the first one is half a pint, and the second is a pint right?

and lastly, how much of each of this do you think would be a good estimate for my 69 long bed exterior and interior?

soooo many questions, i know :)
i want to get it right.

Don"t use Acrylic Enamel !!!! It looks good for a wile but after time it just don't hold up. Then it takes a lot longer to dry! I need to call my firend/body man tomarow so I'll ask him what he has!! All my paint is PPG

Most people don't even use Lacquer any more!

I don't know if you even found the photos of the inside of my truck, But thats just base coat clear coat not wetsanded or buffd

Most people don't even use Lacquer any more!
"Tree-huggers" made it an environmental issue.

Laquer is also very hazardous to your health, (proven to be cancer causing).

i hear your not suppose to wetsand/buff the interior, it is too shiny in your eyes when driving.

IMO i would use either base coat clear coat or i would use imron. Imron would be my first choice of paint its what the airplanes and big trucking companies use to finish with. I painted a 34 coupe one time and the guy didnt have any place to put it so it sat out in the cow pasture for 8 yrs and gathered dust. When he did decide to start driving it again all he did was wash it with hot soapy water it came out looking like it just got painted. It is a very tough durable product. Now you might not be able to get the exact color your wanting but i bet you will find something to your likeing. Here is what i googled up on imron. From the infor on the Dupont home page i bet they can do a chroma vision on the color your wanting and mix it up for you.

Hello,
If you go with a single stage urethane you wont be using the U-pol clear.
Clearcoat is only used when there is a base color application.
I believe Jerry's paint in sacramento carries the ful-thane line, I believe thay are a DuPont distributor. I get my products in grass valley

I just ran in to Ed and he said my paint is a base!!Coat Clearcoat! Clear is a 20 21 180$ a gallon Just talk to where you want to get the paint at and they will know if you say basecoat clear coat! If you do that!! your going to have to spin some more money on a buffer sandpaper compound Glaze!! I'll let you know now if you buff and hit a edge on your truck it can take the clear back off all the way down to paint! so you woad need to repaint that hole part! When putting clear on and you don't get as much on as you need to it will fog up and

Thats why I let a pro do mine!! You can do a single stage paint job! It wont last near as long as clear. on a autodetailing forum in they was just talking about clear Vs single stage!

http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/sh ... =ClearCoat

Take a look at that!!

My advice would be not to sand close to the edges. Another thing you can do is to tape the edges so you do buff through. You would also want to run the tape across your clothes just so it dont have as much stick to it. This way it has less chance of pulling fresh clear off. When removing it lay it back on top of itself so its at a 180 degree pull also.

steve302,
ill have to check that out soon.

1971fordcustom,
thanks for the info,
from that link it looks like ill be doing basecoat clearcoat.

so the plan is..
basecoat clearcoat setup, non ppg paint, probably getting at Jerry's in Sacramento.
so Acrylic Urethane is the best for the base coat right? and is there more than one kind of clear coat(besides brands)? whats the best?

thanks for all the help guys!!!!!!!!!!!

Whoa!

Youre getting things mixed up!
Bottom line is for a good finish you will be wetsanding and polishing no matter what.
If you go with a basecoat in DuPont the product you will want will be called Chromabase BC it will run around $250-$500 per gallon for the base plus reducer depending on color.
Whenever the term Arcylic Urethane is used its considered the clear for a basecoat or a singlestage paint.
Even though the base coat may be a urethane, you want to just call it "base coat" to avoid confusion.
Depending on what clear you use it will be an additional $100-$300 per gallon including catylist.
Basecoats can add up really fast as you can see.

If you go with a singlestage product such as the Arcylic Urethane called Ful-Thane made by DuPont under the Nason name it will range from $200 to $350 per gallon including reducer and Catylist.
See the price difference?
If youre doing all the prep and painting yourself and you dont have much experience with bodywork and paint i strongly recomend the singlestage because its more forgiving. Again this is only if you are going with a solid NON metallic or pearl color.
Reasons i suggest a single stage........
If you dont have a booth, every flaw in the surface of your truck, scracthes, tiny chips, uneven sanding (shows scratches in the base) and if you get any dirt on the base while clearing it will show as its trapped between the color and clear.
With a single stage if there is a small flaw evident while painting, bugs, small chips etc..... the bug can be removed while the paint is wet and recoated in that area, of course it will need a wetsanding and polish to totally level the area back out, small chips can actually be recoated several times, or even dabb paint in the chip, and block level and polish once dry. If a bug or dirt lands in a base/clear system while clearing you have to be damn good at removing it without disturbing the base, if you do disturb the base you will be repainting the panel once its dry because you cant re-apply base over clear wet on wet
And last but not least, if everything goes wrong you are not out a mega ton of money.

If you are going to have a shop paint the truck, then you need to let the painter pick his products of choice.

Just remember there are alot of junk paint products out there, i would be careful when you go on the hunt for your products, if a paint store sees that you are shocked by the prices they will have no problem trying to sell you a synthetic enamel at $30 per gallon and try to convince you that its the best paint on the market. their job is to make a sale thats what they are in business for.
