Energy Suspension leaf bushing part #s

Post by moy »

So, I recently ordered new leaf bushings for my '69 f100. After a discussion with their tech support I come to the conclusion that I need part number 4.2139, as it contains all the bushings needed for the flex-o-matic springs. I received the box yesterday only to find six bushings instead of eight. The part number on the box is correct and there are eight inner sleeves in the package, but I'm two bushings short. Does anyone have the correct part number for a complete bushing kit, or was this just the result of a brainfart along the way somewhere?

I'd be more inclined to think you got the right box with the wrong number of bushings in it, since you got the correct number of inner sleeves and it's the correct PN (I just checked their website). Just give 'em a call and let 'em know....mistakes happen.

Called them today, they're sending me the bushings that I'm missing. Apparently all of Energy Suspension's kits are built to order and someone screwed up, Oh well,

I just bought the same kit and the problem I'm getting is with taking the old metal sleeves out to put the new bushings in, were you able to take yours out and how?

I'd try burning them like fordman said.
I've distorted them using a punch and hammer before! :o
A bearing press might come in handy here though... :hmm:

Two questions...

1. How much was the complete set?

2. Do you re-use the outer metal shell with the new bushings?

I'm gonna change the bushings in the 71 F-250. I found the part number to 4.2138. The instructions didn't say whether I should re-use the metal shells or not.

No, for Energy Susp poly rear bushing sets they must be removed (and you may end up inventing new curse words in the process!).

Getting the inner sleeve out of rubber is pretty easy... find a segment of pipe about the same diameter as the bushing, put some washers on the outer end and feed a 3/8 threaded rod thru it. Start tightening on the pipe end (against washers), and the other nut will pull the sleeve out. If the rubber is as deteriorated as mine was, you'll be able to pry most of it out with a flatblade.

Assuming you don't have a press and/or don't want to remove the springs...
The leaf eyelet bushings aren't hideous - a screwdriver driven into the eyelet gap helps open it up, PB, a good punch and hammer do the rest.
The shackles are tougher - I used a vise to hold it still, ran a hacksaw through the sleeve and reattached blade, cut until through only the sleeve, then punched a flatblade screwdriver under the sleeve along one side of the cut - that rolls the edge inwards, loosening it, then can punch it out (use PB also). In fact, start soaking the sleeves with penetrating oil in advance.

Energy's front bushings and cab mounts DO require use of the original shells/metal.
Good luck with the 'manual' method, or go find a press :)
