Unreal $50 paintjob in the magazine

Post by jzjames »

Did anyone else notice the infamous 'unreal $50 paintjob' is featured in a special issue of Hot Rod Magazine on the newstands now? Its an issue on body and paint, and they are showing the process on a old Ford Falcon.

Yup, rolling it on with foam rollers, it looks to be exactly the process of the unreal $50 paintjob - only they call it a $98 paintjob. The mag is a issue called Body & Paint put out by Hotrod Magazine.

Hey Keith, if you happen to see this, curious if you finished that fender you were rolling paint on?

Funny you should mention this. No, I haven't done anything more with that fender since the 6 coats I applied back in this thread, but lately I've been giving some serious thought to giving this a try again, mainly due to my already having the paint, and the current lack of funds to go with a BC/CC. Yeah, it'll be time-consuming with all the sanding, but I guess I have nothing to lose. It's not quite the color I was hoping for....I really wanted it to be several shades darker....but then again I'm just building a nice daily driver, not a show truck, so I could live with it. Considering the low cost of the Rustoleum, I'd like to just get another batch mixed up, but I understand the tint base used for mixing custom colors for this stuff is virtually unobtainable these days. I haven't checked into it lately, but like I said, I'm very seriously considering it.

I got a gallon of bright red polyurethane enamel with the purchase of my truck and have just pulled it into the garage to start painting(rolling). Most of the body work is done and I got a coat on the bed so far, for the first coat I think it works great.

Yep, that was me. :D I'm real happy with how it turned out and is standing really well. I just got back the other day from a 2 week hunting trip where the truck was used hard everyday on old logging roads (some hadn't been driven on in years!). There was some scuff-scrape marks from branches and sticks, but most rubbed right off with a soft rag. The worst was a deep scratch that was made when I lifted my chain saw over the side, but you can touch-up with a spraycan and a foam brush. My buddy's new Dodge was scratched-up more than my 71, which of corse I pointed out to him several times.

I think i'm gonna give this a try here...

I red the hole article, but didn't understand some terms, like ''mineral spirits'', ''enamel'', ''buff with a compound'' and what kink of paint is ''Trenclad''?

Can somebody give me a help? :D

tremclad is a canadian based rust-oleum, its a rust paint that prevents rust.
mineral spirits is a paint thinner, buffing with a compound means polish with a wax or something like that
