paint bubbling on door panels-painted-what do you think?

Post by 1971ford »

my old panels are blue and they have some spots that look like its rusty. and im wanting a blue/white coloring in my interior. so i took off the old panels and sanded it with just some wool like material. then i cleaned it off and tried to spray some rattle can gloss white on them. well no matter what there is always bubbling in the paint. i thought it might be because it wasnt rough enough so i sanded the bubbling spots alot harder until it got to metal. then i tried painting that. still bubbled, so i sanded it off and sprayed primer first this time, that made the paint crack.

whats wrong?
i dont think its the paint because when i used good paintshop paint on my rims it bubbled at times too.
we have been driving the truck alot without door panels and its annoying, so i figured i would ask :D

need pix.... bubbling could mean anything, if you are in a bad painting environment, say WD-40, armor all, any stuff like that with silicone or acrylic in it, will cause fish eye, then there is surface rust, the trick to that is to get rid of all the bad metal, till it all looks new, and check why its rusting there, moisure might be getting in your door panels and staying there causing rust...

im painting them right on my tailgate in about 70-85 degrees. i cant get pictures right now because my brother is gone with the camera but he will be back later today so i can get pictures. i think i may of sanded the bubbles off again though. the only spot on the whole door panel with rust is a maybe the size of 2 quarters. nothing bad. thanks for the reply.

im not trying to offend you, if you bought the truck the way it is, 9 times out of 10 there is a bad bondo job on it, unless you know for certian ( youve seen the truck down to bare metal) it has some filler on it, im willing to bet money on that... i have a friend that just got a paint job a year ago, and around his wheel wells it started to bubble, thats because the guy who did the prep work never got rid of the rust and just threw some body filler on it...

on the door panels its just rust paint and metal, I just went and double checked.i doubt it is on the body of my truck also because i have stipped down to metal the whole front clip and the doors and there is no filler, but it could possibly be on my bed. thanks for the input.

Bubbles leaves it pretty wide open...

You aren't using laqure(SP?) are you? Because laqure(SP?) over enamel won't work...

Take a look at

spray paint will do that if the can isnt mixed right from the factory. try shaking it more. or buy a new can of paint.

is it bubbling or "fish eye" ing? you get fish eye when chemicals or oils are still present on the surface.
