Best tool for surface rust removal

Post by 69twotone »

Hi all,
I received two doors and a right and left fender from the person I bought mytruck from. All of the parts I received are in great shape one of the doors has a couple spots of rust on the bottom (appears to be surface)and the back side of one of the fenders has little rust spots on it.
:?
What is the best tool to remove this. I have never done body work so I have no idea and am learning. :fr:

Once I remove the rust should I put anything on them? :?

Should I put something different on the front versus the back. :?

No pictures of the parts but can snap some and add if necessary
THought I would add a picture of the truck though since I can't figure out how to do the mini picture that many people have.

Any and all advice appreciated

(I was bored, so I gave you an avatar and a sig image, taken from your Photobucket album.)

If it's just surface rust, with no pits, you can just sand it down, prime and paint. If it's pitted, then you probably should consider sandblasting those sections to get ALL the rust out of the pits, then a light coat of filler, prime and paint.

i usually go after mine with a feathered sanding disc for an angle grinder, then putty if the scratches are pretty deep

Like Keith says if its just surface rust just sand prime and paint. But i think i would try what i call the push test on the spot on the door. Take a awl and try pushing lightly on the rust on the door. If its more than surface you will know really fast. Most generaly any rust starting from behind the outter skin will show up as a bubble of rust. surface rust will look like if you just left a peice of metal out and it got rained or dewed on a day or two earlier. This is the difference between them as best as i can describe it.

take you a nail and poke the rust a little and see if you bust through. If you do bust through, it's weak enough you should probably have sandblasted and epoxy primed. Whoever you chose to sandblast can usually either epoxy prime it for you or shoot with self-etching primer or will usually refer you to someone. Depends on how bad/deep as to what you should do and what you intend with truck (show/drive/race, etc).

Oh yeah, meant to say if you bust through, once it's very clean (either mechanical or sand), you can either patch panel or fiberglass. Patch panels can either be welded in or pop-riveted for example. Just remember regular primer breathes and metal can rust under it, epoxy primer will seal, but would eventually need to be scuffed and top coated or it will turn chalky if left to sun/elements long enough.

If it is just surface rust with no pitting, you might try using aluminum foil. Use the foil like sand paper. The foil removes the rust and leaves the remainder. Prime and paint immediately afterwards. I tried foil on several tools left outside and it does work amazingly enough.

Do a search for auto body repair, etc. and you will have enough material to read for weeks. Choose carefully and you will get some really good information.

The only way to stop rust if you bust through is remove the bad and replace with good metal period. Any other type of repair is only a quick fix and will not last very long at all. The fiberglass type fillers will last about 3 yrs maxium if that long. Then your back to step one again.
