Post by 1971ford »

 im stuck in park because my shifter rod came loose at steering column end. what holds the rod to the steering column? there doesnt seem to be anything that attaches it and there is nothing laying on the ground.
thanks in advance!

From the factory, they had a plastic bushing/keeper on the end of the rod that snapped into the hole of the shifter lever. I have no idea where to find those, and I have looked.
If you look at the end of the shift rod, you will see it is two different diameters. What the PO did on my truck, which seems to work fine, is to take a piece of fuel line with the inside diameter of the line of the line the same being the same or just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the larger diameter on the shift rod. Cut a piece just long enough to go from the 'washer' on the shift rod to the end of the large diameter section of the rod. The use calipers to measure the inside diameter the hole in the shift lever. Use electrical tape and wrap the small diameter part of the shift rod until it's the same diameter as the hole in the shift lever. Use a utility knife to cut the tape off just behind the groove on the shift rod. Insert it into the shift lever and use an E-clip of the proper size to secure it.

I did make a mistake, though.
The shift rod is the same diameter all the way across. Don't know why I thought it was stepped.:?
Basically just measure the rod from the groove to the 'washer', then measure the thickness of the shift lever and subtract that from the lengthe of the rod, cut a piece of tubing that length, and slide it onto the rod.
Use some electrical tape to build up what's left to the diameter of the hole in the shift lever, then cut it off just behind the groove.
Slide it into the hole on the shift lever, and put an E-clip of the right size into the groove of the shift rod.
You want to build up the end of the rod so it doesn't flop around in the hole of the shift lever. The tubing is so you can get a nice snug fit between the E-clip and the face of the shift lever.

71 Ford,

I'd gotten those bushings before, (thought it was LMC/but it wasn't). Maybe Dennis Carpenter? I know I've got a link somewhere for them, I'll keep looking. I've lost the plastic bushing before too and had to do the crawl to get back home.
The stud/bolt on the bottom of that linkage rod is another "proprietary" type part too. Don't lose it!

problem fixed! we went to ace and my dad picked out some parts and spent some time under the hood and it works fine now. and then my dad went to napa to get coolant for his car, when he passed the grommets/other stuff section he saw a part that was for fixing the problem we had that would of worked. oh well. they were out of stock ( my dad saw a picture above where it would of been that showed what should be there) but hes going to go back soon to get the part to keep in the glove box if his way of fixing it fails.
thanks for the help guys!!
