Apologies to Darlingtonpride

Post by shrektruck »

Darlingtonpride posted a pic with the title "Worlds Ugliest Bumper", It may be ugly but I just finised cutting mine off in prep for the new Class V hitch. Man! It's a good thing the Shrektruck's a 1 ton cause that bumper weighs about 500 pounds by itself.
The bumper was a "custom" install on a sliding pipe arrangement so you can slide it out when you have a slide in camper in the bed, there was also a reciever setup welded in and to the bumper with 3/4 inch rod. The bumper mounts were bolted AND welded to the frame. I guess they didn't want it to go anywhere. They did a good job because it took about three hours to cut, grind, unbolt the thing. Here's a couple pics, note the extra pipe inside the mounting pipe...stout, I bet my mileage goes up 2 MPG!

That bumper looks pretty stout. I have to ask about the tailgate/door on the truck? I am trying to do something like that I think to my blazer tailgate. Do you have any pics/info about it? Thanks

Gmcjimmy,
It was on the truck when I bought it and in pretty bad shape. I got rid of it before it fell off. It was a fiberglass topper made by Glastite sometime in the mid 70s. I know you can't find them in good shape anymore but there are several companies making similar toppers. Here's the only other pic I know of.

I would like to put a topper like that on my truck. Now that I have the trailer finished (and licensed) I really don't need the bed for hauling stuff, so I'd like to cover it.
Any ideas on where to get one like that for our trucks?

Shrektruk,

I've seen uglier! Saw a chebby car hauling a refrigerator on the trunk lid today!

flyboy, I had a Glastite like that one on my 79', (before i parted her out). Couldn't keep shocks on the rear door of it, (it went through 40# hydraulic shocks like candy). The thing fell on my wife one day and almost knocked her out! Slammed down on me a couple of times and I finally sold it for $40!

The rear doors on their fiberglass toppers are heavy!
That's an understatement.
Hope this helps.
